Peking’s Party Pleasers

Happy Birthday, a collection of festive birthday-themed kitchen textiles designed by Julia Junkin was introduced by Peking Handicraft Inc. (800/872-6888 or www.pkhc.com). The brightly colored apron and kitchen towels feature a double-layer birthday cake, complete with lit candles and flower accents, set against a lime green background and accented with polka-dot trim. The matching placemats showcase the same birthday cake design, and coordinating napkins display slices of the cake. The collection offers a cheerful, fun, and feminine collection, perfect for celebrating the big day.

Sorghum's Back in Style

A line of sweet sorghums was added to the line of high-quality gourmet sauces and seasonings from Bourbon Barrel Foods (877/307-6418 or www.bourbonbarrelfoods.com) that reflect the rich heritage of Kentucky’s bourbon country. The new line includes: straight Kentucky Sweet Sorghum, Bourbon Vanilla Sorghum, and Blueberry Sorghum. The company is leading the resurgence of sorghum, which was a staple in Kentucky kitchens before World War II, but then skipped a generation. It is making a comeback for its health benefits and as an alternative to using highfructose corn syrup or other highly processed sweeteners and colorants.

Not-So-Plain Vanilla

Plain vanilla is definitely not the way to describe the new Gourmet Vanilla line from Frontier Natural Products Coop (800/669-3275 or www.frontiercoop.com). The exotic premium vanillas offer divergent flavor profiles. Each is available as both an extract and whole beans. Organic Ugandan Vanilla has a sweet, smooth and subtle flavor. The vanilla from Papua New Guinea is extra-sweet and features floral notes, making it perfect for desserts and sauces. Because of the way organic Indonesian vanilla beans are cured, their flavor holds up at high temperatures, an ideal vanilla for baking.

Ginger Coffee Chews

Delivering a smooth-roasted taste and throat-warming heat reminiscent of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, Hot Coffee Ginger Chews are the new cup-less coffee creation from The Ginger People (800/551-5284 or www.gingerpeople.com). These warm and soothing chews are made from Arabica and Robusta coffee from East Java, one of the finest coffee-growing regions in the world. The all-natural coffee chew is blended with just the right amount of fresh ginger to create the sensation. Besides flavor, these snappy sweets have the added perk of antioxidants. Research suggests ginger and coffee are both among the best food sources for an antioxidant- rich diet. The Chews are available in 3-oz. resealable bags and 4.5-oz. shelf-friendly boxes.
